About the Museum
The Belgian Navy Museum houses the unique collection of Johnny Geldhof, former marine of the Belgian Navy. This exceptional collection chronicles the complete history of Belgian naval service from World War II to the present day.
During WWII, 1,626 Belgian fishermen and sailors served in the Royal Navy Section Belge, fleeing German occupation to join the Allied war effort. They served on corvettes, destroyers, minesweepers, and patrol vessels across the Royal Navy fleet. After the war ended in January 1946, the Belgian Navy was established.
Among the RNSB's most notable ships were the corvettes HMS Buttercup (K193) and HMS Godetia (K226), which escorted vital Atlantic convoys. Belgian crews also took part in Operation Jubilee at Dieppe in 1942 and carried out dangerous mine sweeping missions with Motor Minesweepers (MMS) along the English Channel and North Sea coasts.
After the war, the Belgian Navy built a modern fleet including 26 coastal minesweepers (MSCs, such as M933 Koksijde), ocean minesweepers (MSOs), and later the tripartite minehunters (CMTs). The logistics ship A957 Kamina served in the Korean War and Congo operations, while the frigate F910 Victor Billiet represented Belgium in NATO naval forces during the Cold War.
